The 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport feels more like a family car than a sport. I took it for a test drive on the back roads and through the side streets of LA and it performed fine. It’s fitted with a sport suspension, paddle shifters, blind-spot monitors, 18-inch wheels, and sport seats. It was the family-friendly aspects that really stood out though. It has a spacious interior, smart family options including a hands-free smart trunk and ample truck space, and road-trip-worthy seats. It’s perfect for the family that likes a little bit of adventure in their lives.
To look at the car, you’d definitely say it’s sporty. It has sleek lines and stylish chrome-tipped duel exhaust. The front grille and bumper fascia also have the sport appearance, and the 17-inch alloy wheels add to the overall appearance.
First, I took the car for an adventure around LA searching for cool art and funky buildings. I appreciated the automatic climate control, keyless ignition, panoramic sunroof, and ventilated front seats. The 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat was one of my favorite features. I have a shorter upper body. It’s one of the reasons I prefer to drive an SUV, truck, or van. I have a difficult time with viability when I’m lower, especially if the car has a higher front end or many blind spots. The 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat allowed me to crank up the seat and increase my viability. I also took advantage of the 9-speaker 400-watt Infinity audio system. Since Athena wasn’t with me, I could listen to whatever I wanted. I was like a kid in a candy store, listening to old school rock rather than “The Wheels on the Bus” or “Let It Go”.
I picked up Athena the next morning and tested out the more family-focused features. The adaptive cruise control was ideal for highway driving and the rear-view camera was my friend while parking. The interior space was one of the greatest highlights. There’s plenty of room in the driver’s seat and the seat is adjustable if you’re short. The seats are comfortable, with plenty of bottom cushion and support. In back, there is an excess of knee room or space for little feet so they are not kicking the front seat.
There were plenty of storage bins or places to put my phone, keys, drinks, and other gadgets. The generous truck space was also a plus for families or travelers. At 16.3 cubic feet, it’s a generous sized truck, and it has handy seat-fold levers inside the truck.
Hyundai has always excelled on the safety front, and the Sonata Sport doesn’t disappoint. The usual component of traction control, stability control, and brake-assist features are all part of the Sonata Sport. Inside, a full range of airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, keep passengers safe.
The 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport looks and handles like a sport car yet it offers all the luxurious and space of a family sedan.
