Thanks to partnering with a number of car companies, I get to test drive a lot of vehicles. I have my favorites for style, comfort, affordability, and luxury. After recently driving the 2017 Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription, it takes the cake for the best family SUV on the market. I can’t imagine more comfortable seats or a better safety record. Add in the endless cargo space and all the right connections and you’ve got one heck of an SUV.
The XC90 is pretty to look at and as you step inside the refined and relaxing interior it is even better to hold. Every element exudes comfort and class from the soft Nappa leather and birchwood to the unique handcrafted details like diamond-cut buttons.
I sat in the passenger seat and played with the massage buttons. It was like being at a spa. Not only could I adjust my seat 14 ways, but the massage function, offered on both front seats, massaged my lower and upper back with two adjustable levels. Also up front, the seat adjustment and cushion padding make this SUV an enjoyable ride even after hours on the road. Each seat, including the second and third row, is designed with spine support and superior comfort. Add in the 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system and we never wanted to get out of the vehicle.
Volvo is known for its safety and the XC90 has been named a 2017 Top Safety Pick+. It boasts a long list of safety and driver assistance features including frontal collision detection with automatic braking, and it also applies the brakes when the driver attempts to turn in front of an oncoming car. Energy-absorbing seat cushions and self-tightening seat belts reduce potential spinal injuries if the vehicle goes off the road and auto-steering has been been added to prevent a road departure in the first place.
Both comfort and safety are highly desirable qualities in a family SUV, but if you don’t have plenty of space, it just won’t work. The XC90 has seating for seven and you can fold down the interior seating for ample storage space. It has enough room for the family and for a weekend’s worth of luggage.
The technology system, Sensus, is my favorite feature of the XC90. Focused around an intuitive touchscreen, the XC90’s large display features voice command capabilities, a heads-up display that lets you see information while keeping your eyes on the road, and Apple CarPlay. The XC90’s navigation system is intuitive and simple to use. Rather than slowly typing in the exact address, I simply wrote the hotel name on the touchscreen and it gave me all of the possible options. It was the easiest navigation system that I’ve used yet.
The 2017 Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription was my favorite family SUV because of the safety record, the comfort, the style, and the ample seating and storage room. Athena loved it for the comfortable rear seating, the sun protection visor on the window, the arm rest in the middle seat, and the duel climate zones in the rear seats. Cord loved it for the sharp lines and style, comfortable seating, and create storage space for things like our phones and drinks. Besides the obvious gas expense, we loved everything about the Volvo XC90. After driving the Volvo S60 T5 and the XC60 T6, Volvo is quickly becoming our top pick for family vehicles.
