Since moving up to South Bay in Los Angeles, we’ve been tasting our way around the area discovering our favorite foods and local drinking spots. When I walked into The Rockefeller in Manhattan Beach, it was originally because of the fun vibe, but I didn’t expect to find a truly bucket list worthy item. After tasting their Kalbi Cheesesteak, I was hooked. With a cheesesteak that amazing, I knew I had to go back and try more. Admittedly, during my first visit, I may have had one too many drinks to take photos and do the foods at The Rockefeller justice, but I returned a second time to make your mouth water and introduce you to a bucket list worthy cheesesteak. We took our time ordering. We wanted to taste everything. With choices like Pork Belly Sliders, Manhattan Meatballs, BBQ Chicken Flatbread, and Pot Pie, and Kalbi Cheesesteak, the choice was difficult. It was like they reached into my brain and found all of my favorite foods and put them on one menu. We figured it wouldn’t hurt to order too much food and bring the leftovers home so we went big. We started with the BBQ Chicken Flatbread, Manhattan Meatballs (because we heard they were on many top ten lists in LA), Allagash Queso, and Truffle Mac & Cheese. We brought our A game (A for appetite).
The Manhattan Meatballs were served with veal, pork, beef, pomodoro sauce, micro basil, and parmesan and they were heavenly. I knew I wanted to save room for the cheesesteak but I couldn’t help but eat two meatballs.
The Manhattan Meatballs coupled with the Truffle Macaroni & Cheese made me feel like I was stepping back into childhood and my mother’s kitchen. They are the comfort foods of my past.
Then came the Kalbi Cheesesteak and not even my mother could make something so tasty. (Sorry, Mom, if you’re reading this. I still love your cooking.) It’s short rip, provolone, onion, garlic aioli, sriracha, and kimchi served to perfection.
Ok. Ok. I realize that’s enough food to serve an army but we couldn’t leave without testing their sweets and the Hot Chocolate Chip Cookie was calling my name.
If you absolutely have to narrow your choices down to two or three, don’t leave without trying the Manhattan Meatballs and the Kalbi Cheesesteak. And even if you have to take the cookie home, you will thank me later.
