A Perfect Week in Bucharest: Spas, Castles, and Cross-Border Adventures

Bucharest Romania

Bucharest surprised me in the best possible way. It’s a city where old-world charm meets modern energy, where grand architecture stands beside vibrant cafes, and where every day feels like a new adventure waiting to unfold. During our week in Romania’s capital, traveling with my mom and Max, we experienced a perfect mix of relaxation, culture, and unforgettable day trips—and it quickly became one of our favorite European destinations.

Where to Stay: Athina Suites Hotel

Athina Suites Hotel, Bucharest, Romania Our home base for the week was Athina Suites Hotel, and I genuinely couldn’t have chosen a better place. From the moment we arrived, it felt less like a hotel and more like a stylish city apartment designed for comfort and convenience.

The suites are spacious, modern, and thoughtfully designed—ideal for families. Having separate living and sleeping spaces made a huge difference, especially traveling with Max. Mornings started slowly with coffee on the balcony, and evenings ended with room to unwind after full days of exploring.

What stood out most was the location. Athina Suites is tucked just far enough from the busy center to feel peaceful, but close enough that everything is easily accessible. Whether we were heading out for dinner, sightseeing, or catching a tour, it was all within reach.

A Day at Therme Bucharest (A Highlight of Our Trip)

therme bucharest massive poolIf there is one experience you absolutely cannot miss in Bucharest, it’s Therme Bucharest. This was hands down one of the most incredible spa experiences we’ve ever had—and what makes it even more special is how family-friendly it is.

Imagine stepping into a tropical paradise, even in the middle of winter—palm trees, warm thermal pools, and a peaceful, sunlit atmosphere that instantly melts your stress away.

We spent most of our time in the Galaxy area, which is perfect for families. Max was in heaven with the slides and wave pools, while my mom and I found moments to relax on the hydro massage beds and thermal loungers. What I loved most was how seamlessly it blends fun and relaxation. One moment you’re splashing in the pool with your child, and the next you’re enjoying a quiet moment with a warm drink in hand.

The entire experience felt effortless—clean, beautifully designed, and incredibly well organized. It’s the kind of place where hours pass without you noticing, and you leave feeling completely recharged.

Exploring Bucharest: Pasajul Victoriei & Old Town

Bucharest itself is a joy to explore. One of our favorite stops was Pasajul Victoriei, a colorful passageway filled with hanging umbrellas that creates the perfect photo moment. It’s whimsical, vibrant, and a fun stop, especially with kids.

From there, we wandered through the Old Town, where cobblestone streets are lined with cafes, restaurants, and historic buildings. It’s the kind of place where you don’t need a plan—just walk, explore, and let the city reveal itself.

Dinner at Trattoria Colosseum

One evening, we had dinner at Trattoria Colosseum, and it was one of the best meals of the trip. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a cozy Italian feel that makes you want to linger.

The food was exceptional—fresh pasta, perfectly cooked dishes, and flavors that felt both comforting and elevated. It was one of those dinners where everyone leaves happy, full, and already talking about coming back.

Fairytale Castles: A Day Trip with GetYourGuide

Dracula Castle Romania One of the most magical days of our week was our castle tour with GetYourGuide, visiting three iconic locations: Peleș Castle, Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle), and Cantacuzino Castle (Wednesday Castle).

Peleș Castle was easily one of the most beautiful castles I’ve ever seen. Nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, it looks like something straight out of a storybook, with intricate details and breathtaking surroundings.

Bran Castle, often linked to the Dracula legend, has a completely different feel—mysterious, historic, and fascinating to explore. Walking through its narrow passageways felt like stepping back in time.

Cantacuzino Castle, known for its appearance in Wednesday, added a modern pop culture twist to the day. It’s elegant, dramatic, and offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains.

The entire experience was seamless, well-organized, and perfect for families who want to see a lot in one day without the stress of planning.

A Day Trip to Bulgaria with Eddex Travel

Veliko Tarnovo BulgariaCrossing into Bulgaria with Eddex Travel was one of the most unique experiences of our trip—and something I highly recommend adding to your itinerary.

The journey itself is beautiful, passing through countryside landscapes that feel completely different from Bucharest. Our destination was Veliko Tarnovo, a historic town known for its dramatic setting and medieval charm.

The highlight was Tsarevets Fortress, perched high above the town with sweeping views that are absolutely breathtaking. Walking through the ruins, you can feel the history in every stone.

We also spent time wandering the cobblestone streets, browsing local shops, and enjoying authentic Bulgarian food. It felt slower, quieter, and incredibly authentic—a perfect contrast to the city energy of Bucharest.

What made this experience even better was Eddie himself. Eddie from Eddex Travel handled all the logistics and made the day feel stress-free and tailored to my family. He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and it felt more like traveling with a local friend rather than a guide.

What Else to Do in Bucharest

Beyond these highlights, there’s so much more to explore in Bucharest:

  • Visit the Palace of Parliament, one of the largest buildings in the world

  • Walk along Calea Victoriei for shopping and architecture

  • Explore Herăstrău Park for a relaxing afternoon outdoors

  • Stop into local cafes and bakeries for pastries and coffee

Final Thoughts

Peles Castle RomaniaA week in Bucharest offers the perfect balance of relaxation, culture, and adventure. From soaking in the thermal pools at Therme Bucharest to exploring castles in the mountains and crossing into Bulgaria, every day brought something new and memorable.

What surprised me most was how family-friendly it all felt. Traveling with my mom and Max, we found experiences that brought us together, gave us space to relax, and created moments we’ll never forget.

And after a week in Bucharest, I can confidently say it’s one that deserves a spot on every traveler’s bucket list.
