Five Countries That Completely Surprised Me (In the Best Way Possible)

The places I didn’t expect to love… and ended up not wanting to leave

There are the destinations you dream about for years—the ones everyone talks about, the ones you think you already understand before you even get there. And then there are the places you book without overthinking. The ones that don’t come with huge expectations.

Those are the ones that end up changing everything.

These five countries completely surprised me—not just because they were beautiful, but because of how much they gave us as a family. The experiences, the people, the feeling of being somewhere that still feels real.

Nicaragua

Ojo de Agua Nature ReserveNicaragua wasn’t at the top of my list… until it was. And now I can’t imagine not having experienced it.

What I loved most was how untouched it felt. There’s no rush to impress here. It’s raw, adventurous, and completely unfiltered.

Swimming in the natural spring pools at Ojo de Agua felt like discovering a hidden oasis. Surrounded by jungle, the water is so clear it almost doesn’t look real.

And then there was Cerro Negro—hiking up a black volcanic slope and racing down it on a board. It’s chaotic, exhilarating, and one of those experiences that instantly becomes a core memory.

Nicaragua isn’t trying to be anything other than what it is—and that’s exactly why it stands out.

Romania

Therme Bucharest, RomaniaRomania completely caught me off guard.

I expected castles and history—and yes, you’ll find that—but what I didn’t expect was how much variety there is here. One moment you’re deep in medieval towns, and the next you’re relaxing in one of the most unique wellness spaces I’ve ever experienced.

Therme Bucharest was one of the best experiences of the entire trip. It’s not just a spa—it’s an experience. Palm trees, thermal pools, waterslides, saunas, wellness rituals… and somehow it all works together. It felt like stepping into a completely different world just outside the city.

And then there’s Transylvania—with places like Bran Castle and Peleș Castle that feel like they belong in a storybook.

Romania surprised me because it balances history and modern experiences in a way I didn’t expect—and it does it without feeling overly touristy.

Morocco

Fez Tannery MoroccoMorocco is one of those places that stays with you.

It’s vibrant, chaotic, beautiful, and deeply cultural in a way that pulls you in immediately. Walking through the souks of Marrakech feels like stepping into another world—colors, sounds, spices, textures everywhere you turn.

But the moments that surprised me most weren’t the busy ones—they were the quiet ones. Sitting in a traditional home, sharing Moroccan tea, listening to stories, watching Max play outside with local kids… those are the moments that grounded the entire experience.

And the desert—standing under a sky full of stars, listening to Berber drums—it’s the kind of night you don’t forget.

Morocco isn’t always easy. But that’s part of what makes it so meaningful.

Namibia

Himba Child, NamibiaNamibia felt like another planet in the best way possible.

It’s vast, quiet, and unlike anywhere else I’ve been. There’s a stillness here that you don’t realize you need until you experience it.

Climbing the dunes in Sossusvlei at sunrise was one of those moments where everything just stops. The colors shift, the shadows stretch, and you realize how small you are in the best possible way.

And then there’s Etosha National Park—a completely different kind of safari. Wide open landscapes, animals gathering at waterholes, and a feeling that everything is happening exactly as it should.

Namibia isn’t flashy. It doesn’t try to entertain you. It just exists—and somehow, that’s what makes it so powerful.

Mauritius

Constance Le Prince Maurice, MauritiusMauritius is one of those places that quietly exceeds every expectation.

You might expect beautiful beaches—and yes, they’re here—but what surprised me most was how much more there is beyond that.

The island is layered with culture, nature, and adventure. One moment you’re standing on a white-sand beach, and the next you’re exploring lush landscapes like Black River Gorges National Park, where waterfalls and hiking trails take you deep into the island’s wild side.

And then there’s the water—clear, calm, and full of life. Whether you’re snorkeling, boating, or just floating, it feels like the kind of place you never want to leave.

Mauritius surprised me because it’s not just relaxing—it’s dynamic. It gives you space to slow down, but also invites you to explore.

Why These Places Stay With You

The places you expect to love usually deliver. But the places that surprise you? Those are the ones that shift something.

They don’t come with pressure. You’re not trying to recreate a moment you’ve already seen online. You’re just there—fully present, taking it in as it comes.

And those are the moments that stick.

These countries reminded me that some of the best travel experiences happen when you step outside the obvious. When you say yes to somewhere you don’t fully understand yet.

Because sometimes, those are the places that end up meaning the most.
